Rotten Luck
Jock Tamson's Gairden, Duddingston
Tuesday 11 July 10-11.30am

Retting, Breaking, Scutching, Heckling ... join Iain and John for the latest in our series of flax chats and demos going seed to shelf in Jock Tamson's Gairden. Retting is the process by which water and bacteria rot down the gum in stems to release the flax fibre. When, how, how long? It's in the farmers art and bioscience ....and a lot of luck!

We'll take the air with Iain around this extraordinary community garden, then catch a wiff of retting in the garden's newly installed flax bath. John will talk heritage and contemporary methods over a cuppa - some distance away! - in the JTG sheds.

Register here, free to attend.

Linen Routes in Ceres, Fife
A Sunday Stroll, 16 July 2023, 2 - 4.30pm

Help us co-design our latest Linen Route, this time in the charming village of Ceres in Fife, in collaboration with Birchtree Studios and the Fife Folk Museum.

We'll hear from the Museum team, then join photographer, local resident and flax grower Michael Wolchover on a stroll past disused lades and former weavers cottages and on to Birchtree Studios, where a cuppa and chat around Michael's flax patch await.

Register here, free to attend, places limited,
